Japanese Beef Steak with Garlic Soy Sauce
Seared sirloin steaks sliced and served with a warm garlic, soy and mirin butter sauce.
Ingredients
- 4 sirloin or rump steaks, about 200g each
- 1 tbsp sunflower oil
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- For the sauce: 4 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
- For the sauce: 3 tbsp light soy sauce
- For the sauce: 2 tbsp mirin
- For the sauce: 1 tbsp rice vinegar
- For the sauce: 20g butter
- 4 tbsp finely grated mooli (daikon), to serve
- 2 spring onions, finely sliced
Method
-
Take the steaks out of the fridge 30 minutes before cooking. Pat dry and season well with salt and pepper.
-
Heat the oil in a large frying pan over a high heat until smoking. Cook the steaks for 2 to 3 minutes on each side for medium-rare, or longer to taste. Transfer to a board and rest for 5 minutes.
-
Reduce the heat to medium, add the butter and garlic to the pan and cook for 1 minute until golden. Add the soy sauce, mirin and rice vinegar and simmer for 1 minute.
-
Slice the steaks against the grain, spoon over the sauce, top with the grated mooli and spring onions and serve with rice.
