Traditional Sage & Onion Stuffing

Ingredients

  • 75g butter, plus extra for greasing
  • 2 large onions, finely chopped
  • 200g fresh white breadcrumbs
  • 3 tbsp finely chopped fresh sage
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • Pinch of freshly grated nutmeg
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Method

  1. Heat the oven to 190°C (170°C fan)/gas mark 5 and grease a baking dish.

  2. Melt the butter in a frying pan and cook the onions gently for 10 minutes until soft and translucent.

  3. Tip the onions into a bowl and mix in the breadcrumbs, sage, nutmeg, salt and pepper.

  4. Stir in the egg to bind, adding a splash of water if the mixture is dry.

  5. Press into the dish and bake for 30 to 35 minutes until golden and crisp on top.
